Successfully balancing my family life with the rigors of medical school taught me the attributes required to function effectively under stress. Needless to say, I found myself extremely busy and at some point overwhelmed studies and responsibilities. yet, my love of medicine and my desire to achieve the goals I have for myself provided me with the willingness to overcome any challenges.

At the beginning of my clinical years, I was thrown into the complex and challenging world of internal medicine. during this tenure, I discovered many challenging tasks: the establishment of an extended relationship with a patient, a skillful history and physical examination, a carefully formulated differential, the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, and the pursuit to understand the underlying pathophysiologic processes of diseases. I still remember a patient of mine who was suffering from complications of diabetic nephropathy. every morning I would wake her from deep slumber to inquire bout her condition and perform a physical exam. instead of being annoyed at the disturbance, she came to see me as an integral component of her care during her stay at the hospital and looked at me for decisions in her care. not only did i learn the pathology of disease, but also the special bond that develops between physicians and patients. this experience was reinforced throughout my last few weeks of internal medicine with Dr. Hussain who was a role model in patient/doctor rapport. watching him interact with his patients was an epiphany. the way he worked with patients, his rapport, as well as the way they responded to his care was an invaluable demonstration in practice. I was truly inspired by the experience.

The basic principle in the art of healing is to investigate the the etiology of disease, arrive at a proper diagnosis, treat the condition appropriately, and most importantly attend to the emotional and physiological aspects of the patients' illness. in other words, healing is a universal language. internal medicine offers human interactions with a wide spectrum of patients of all age groups and socioeconomic status. it requites emphasis on continued care, preventive practices, and complex problem solving skills. i value the emphasis internal medicine places on prevention, which is the corner stone of cost effective health care. internal medicine is the perfect medium through which i can develop the clinical skills and judgment that requires a more thorough knowledge than other primary care specialties. internal medicine is my true calling because it is the only field that enables me to have such a broad, yet solid foundation. my strong performance and enthusiasm during my clinical rotations demonstrates my exceptional ability to face these tasks.

My goal is to join a program where academics, research, and solid clinical training are well balanced. my hope is to become a member of a diligent and enthusiastic team that stresses collaboration while encouraging a pursuit towards excellence. it is through the rigorous challenges of such a program that i desire to be trained to become a competent and compassionate physician in internal medicine. I look forward to the next phase of my training with great excitement and strong commitment.

Overall Summary

Dear Dr. Doe-

Your personal statement has great potential. With careful editing and revision, this could become a solid submission for residency programs. Your personal statement has several nice passages that highlight your keen interest in pursuing internal medicine as a medical specialty; these should be enhanced to strengthen the appeal of your personal statement. Your piece is close to having a solid, even flow throughout. Expanding some areas and omitting others will create a more cohesive piece. There are also some consistent grammatical and syntactical errors that need to be addressed and corrected before submission. For instance, always capitalize the first letter that begins a sentence, as well as the personal pronoun "I" (these have been corrected in the above draft). From here, you will want to expand your personal statement to the standard of 650-800 word count. Read over my comments and consider adding what specific qualities you have that will make you an excellent candidate for an internal medicine residency program. Consider the following questions: Do you work well with teams? How well do you function in a crisis? Do you continue your studies independent of specific instruction? Do you continue to follow up on newly-discovered diseases and medications? Please feel free to contact me through our messaging service if you have any specific questions. I look forward to reading your final draft as we work toward making this a polished, solid entry in your residency program application.

Sincerely-
Katherine
